When I was young and really dumb, I'd give friends rides all the time. Thank God, gas was really cheap back then. Rides to and from work every day. Rides to go back home from a faraway job. I even gave a ride to someone who lived 600 miles away, as I was going on vacation to that same state. Too bad, he didn't tell me it would be over 150 miles out of my way. Never, ever, in that 18- month period of stupidity did one single person offer me gas money. I would never advise not giving people rides, however. I have been in position of having no car and it's terrible. I would however, make it clear that my vehicle does not run on charity, and ask a reasonable amount if the situation deemed it necessary.

I can't believe there are no comments to this article. This is a great piece! I am in a situation myself, where a friend frequently asks me for rides, but rarely offers gas compensation. It's not that I "want" the money, but he lives far away and doing all of this driving is really eating up a lot of gas. I'm the type of person who doesn't want to ask for gas money because I don't want to sound rude, but it's starting to cause me to feel resentment toward my friend and I don't want to have those feelings.
